When I was in high school, the pose of choice for girls was the duck face. But recently in the pictures I've seen of high school and even post high school aged girls, I've noticed a new trend that includes the sticking out of the tongue. While I do not claim to understand why this has become a thing, I would like to offer a few reasons as to why a girl might choose to stick out her tongue in pictures—as opposed to simply making fun of her or judging her for her more artistic decisions regarding her face. So please, consider the following.
1. She's contemplating a tongue piercing and she is subtly trying to ask everyone if they think her tongue is beautiful without one before she gets it done.
2. She just drank a blue raspberry slurpee and wanted to know if her tongue was blue so she looked at her reflection in her phone but somehow accidentally took a picture and posted it online. Again. Oops.
3. She lost her front teeth in a tragic boating accident so she compensates for not smiling in pictures with the charming tongue-stuck-out look.
4. She is actually blind and deaf and has so sense of smell so she senses the world around her through her amplified sense of taste.
5. She is always looking at her dog when she takes pictures of herself and she is mirroring what he's doing.
6. She wants to be a dog.
7. She had a boyfriend who told her he thought tongues were the most beautiful part of a woman and she has never forgotten that. She still loves you, Billy.
8. She is a young activist and is sticking her tongue out to the world. She is sticking her tongue out to us all.
9. She had a friend once who could touch her tongue to the bottom of her chin so she's trying to do that and won't stop posting the tongue pictures until she succeeds.
10. She's been working out her tongue muscles and wants to show them off.
11. She is channeling her favorite Pokémon.
12. She has this ongoing argument with her brother about who has more tastebuds so she is constantly posting pictures with her tongue to prove that it's her.
13. She is waiting for a friend to throw a goldfish or M&M in her mouth, all the time.
14. She has overactive saliva glands and keeping her tongue out of her mouth helps it stay drier.
15. She is trying to attract an anteater to come to her house because she has an ant problem and her ads for one in the paper just aren't working.
16. She has a paralyzed face and the only way she can express emotion is with her tongue. Up, means she's happy, down means she's hungry. We're still trying to understand the wiggle.
17. She sticks her tongue out as an homage to her grandfather who passed away five years ago, who owned a candy shop that specialized in lollipops.
18. She's trying to draw attention away from that unibrow/large mole/lazy eye she is so self conscious about.
19. She once got stung in the tongue by a bee and she lost all feeling in it so now it always just hangs out of her mouth and she can't control it.
20. She's heard it's in this year.
