Okay, so I have this theory that In and Out restaurants are really these weird teleportation/magical vortex/liminal spaces outside of reality places because, for one, every time you go in one, not only do they all look the same inside, but they are always run by overly sunny, cheerful robot people that never show a hint of distress. Even though In and Out is like, the busiest fast food restaurant on the planet, there's never a strained smile, never a bead of sweat, never a crack in the smooth veneers of the perfect fast food workers that In and Out somehow manages to always engineer hire.
And like, because they all look the same, how do you know where you really are when you're inside, chowing down on your double double with fries? When we walked into one in Las Vegas today, were we really in Vegas the whole time? Or were we briefly transported to Cleveland? Is there really only one In and Out? Is that why it's always so busy? Does it simultaneously exist in hundreds of places? IT PROBABLY DOES.
Is there a shift in time, too? Like the Lotus Eaters in the Odyssey? Did I spend 30 minutes in there, or 5 days? Were the two older ladies in the corner my age when they came in and they only think they've been in there for a couple hours, but they've really been in there for 50 years?
It's disconcerting.
BECAUSE IT'S TRUE.
